Recycling for Breast Cancer

As part of our Service project Operation Green: Improving Our Communities, Upsilon Phi is collecting cell phones and pagers, inkjet cartridges and laser toner cartridges, printer fuser cores, PDAs, digital cameras, and Ipods and MP3 players for recycling.

Every day, millions of these small electronics and related items are thrown away and end up in our nation's landfills. These products contain dangerous and toxic substances that leach into the soil from the landfills.

By collecting and recycling these small items, Upsilon Phi chapter is helping keep our community free from hazardous waste while simultaneously aiding breast cancer research.

Flocking for Cancer

We flock homes and businesses with pink plastic flamingos to raise money for the local Danville Cancer Association. This has been a very successful effort, so we will continue the tradition to raise more money for the Danville Cancer Association.

The cost to flock a yard with 20 pink plastic flamingos is only $25, all of which goes to the Danville Cancer Association.

Aluminum Can Recycling

By collecting aluminum cans, our chapter is helping Habitat for Humanity build houses in our community and keeping the cans out of the landfills. We have issued a challenge to members: each member should bring ten cans to every meeting. We also have can bins in the lounge areas of Temple and Taylor. All cans we collect are taken to the Habitat office on Hughes Street.

We also strongly encourage everyone to recycle plastic bags and bottles and mixed papers at home.

Homeless Shelter

We regularly help out at the Homeless Shelter with our food drives and odd-job days at the Shelter. This fall we had a very successful food/non-perishables drive and also collected small suitcases, book bags, etc. for the Shelter to distribute to its transient residents.
